8-27-21   THOUGHTS

The word REMNANT in the OT is yaw-thar’.  It means that which is left, the remainder, the reserved, the residue.  It is used in some most interesting ways.  When used of Israel after the Babylonian Captivity, it is tender and precious.  It stands for God’s people in a general way. The “few there be that find it” idea in Matthew 7:14 is behind the remnant idea.  In the passage below, we have a wonderful prophecy set in a time that is significant in history.  The great war machine of Assyria tucks tail and walks away from Jerusalem.  Heroditus confirms this in secular history.  See the place of the REMNANT!
2Kings 19:30-36   ‘The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward.  31  ‘For out of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant, and out of Mount Zion survivors. The zeal of the LORD will perform this. 32  ‘Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, "He will not come to this city or shoot an arrow there; and he will not come before it with a shield or throw up a siege ramp against it. 33  "By the way that he came, by the same he will return, and he shall not come to this city,"’ declares the LORD. 34  ‘For I will defend this city to save it for My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.’" 35  Then it happened that night that the angel of the LORD went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when men rose early in the morning, behold, all of them were dead. 36  So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and returned home, and lived at Nineveh.
2Chron 30:6   The couriers went throughout all Israel and Judah with the letters from the hand of the king and his princes, even according to the command of the king, saying, "O sons of Israel, return to the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, that He may return to those of you who escaped [and] are left ( the remnant of you KJV) from the hand of the kings of Assyria.
After Babylonian Captivity,  Ezra 9:8  "But now for a brief moment grace has been [shown] from the LORD our God, to leave us an escaped remnant and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our bondage.
Isa 1:9    Unless the LORD of hosts Had left us a few survivors (a very small remnant KJV), We would be like Sodom, We would be like Gomorrah.
Jer 23:3 "Then I Myself will gather the remnant of My flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply.
Rom 9:27    Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "THOUGH THE NUMBER OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL BE LIKE THE SAND OF THE SEA, IT IS THE REMNANT THAT WILL BE SAVED;
Rom 11:5  In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice.

My Prayer:
O God of heaven, we do feel as a remnant in this present world.  We beg your presence for our comfort and strength.  We know that you are with us and that you are greater than this world.  We seek peace with you in eternity O God.  Help us to  take root downward and bear fruit upward.           In the name of Jesus         Amen
